You have a (teen or adult) child, and in front of many witnesses your child threatens to kill another person. While no one expects your child to actually do this, as it was just apparently said in momentary anger.
While driving home and admonishing your kid for that foolishness, your child drives over the other person, causing obvious death. It's an accident and you saw it. The other person just ran out in the street (chasing a stray cat/whatever). In shock, your kid continues to drive...leaving the scene of the accident at a high rate of speed.
When you finally get your kid to stop the car...you are struck with the thought that if your child admits to the hit-and-run, it will be considered pre-meditated murder and your protestations will likely be considered just a parent trying to protect their offspring. If you and your kid take off, it's very likely no one will ever know what happened (no evidence on the car, and no witnesses).
Do you:
- take your kid to the police, meaning a much harsher sentence than the accident deserved?
- agree with your child to keep this all a secret, and no one ever knows what circumstances caused the death?
