Thinking of recent history, how many times has the US public kept the US government from doing anything through the right and might of arms? Or even, tried to prevent the government from doing something?

In fairly recent history there's Timothy McVeigh, David Koresh, Randy Weaver, and going further back (60's and 70's) The Weathermen. All of them believed they had some legitimate beef with the government and that they were allowed to take up arms over it, so the question presses itself, "Is that the ideal?".
