judges and whatnot to be taken care of, it will grow longer and longer, until there's no point in filing a suit, since it won't be started in your lifetime, or more cases will never be let into court, all for the privilege of having your need for revenge satisfied. (okay, I don't know if maryland has death penalty, IIRC you said somewhere that it does, but does not use it often enough? However, death penalty seems to compound on the problem, not leave it neutral)
From a societal (is that even a word?) view, locking a person away forever removes hir from soiety as effectively as an execution, for less money.
