Yours are much more lax, in addition we have both state and federal laws, YOu have almost no federal laws and are all state laws. (treating the EU much like the federal entity of the US government) EU has member states and a weak almost nonexistant federal government. US has strong member states with thier own laws and a strong federal government with its own laws. The US federal government has a death penalty but almost NEVER uses it. Timothy McViegh when executed was the only person in 34 years to receive it. (longer than my lifetime) Since 1988 13 other were sentenced none were executed 1 was overturned and is now serving life) Individual states have thier own laws. Michigan has no death penalty (Home of the most dangerous city in the US, Detroit) Texas uses theirs every month or so, Texas home of Huston and Dallas relatively safe citys. Maryland uses the death penalty once a year or so and is the second or third most dangerous city in America. Community service is done here to but unlike your community service in the EU. Here in the US it is rather a joke. Comunity service is given only to 1st time misdemeanor crimes and almost never in any appreciable amounts. 2 weeks unsupervised cleaning up your streets is common. If no one watches you do it then why bother doing it thus no rehabilitation. Respect for the law is rather high on in your country. Here it is rather low because of the differances in governmental styles.
