And this is exactly why I asked - because you're all far more well versed in Good Practice for weight loss :)

I'm aware that muscle weighs more than fat, and intend to keep a close watch on how I /look/ more than just how I'm doing on the scales - easy, since I don't actually own scales (my flatmate has some in her bathroom which I occasionally climb on). Aside from improving my fitness levels, I want to tone up particular areas of my body, and I'm pretty sure that in the toning/aerobic process, the bit of weight I'd like to see gone will go...

So! Sorry, it's late, I'm rambling.

I will weigh myself tomorrow morning and aim for 1kg a week, roughly. By Christmas I'm pretty sure I WILL see a significant difference to how I look, even though the numbers on the scale may not have gone down as much as I may like them to. :)
