They still have the death penalty, and that is one of the reason the EU doesn't want them aboard.
It's a fact that almost all modern nations have abolished the death penalty (or at least aren't actively using it). The only countries to still use it are backwaters like the middle east, some african states, and part of the US. None of these countries have much credibility among civilized states, as far as legal systems are concerned. Face it, the US legal system is concidered a sick joke in Europe.
By adopting such a ridiculous and barbaric practice, the Iraqi governmenet is showing that it is strongly influenced by the US(not that they anyone ever doubted that). That is not something to be proud of, and it will not help the new government gain acceptence, credibility or support from the global community. |
