Have been requested to build a video server for the video editing club at school. I've been told that it will mainly do archival duties, and thus needs a great deal of hard drive space. Being a (samba) server, I doubt it will need that much processing power, so I have not gone for the latest and greatest stuff (read: Core 2 Duo/Quad), instead the processor chosen will probably be Pentium 4/D, and the potential mobos reflect that choice.
Anyway, I would like to know if anyone has had any experience with the following motherboards, as this (the server) will probably have to last 5 years (at least, and be relatively constantly on, unless something happens, or no one will be around, e.g. the 2 month-long school holidays.)
Onto the actual list:
Asus P5GV-MX
Asus P5LD2-VM
Gigabyte GA-8I945GMH-RH
Gigabyte GA-8I945GMF
Gigabyte GA-8I915G-MF
Intel D945GTP
I expect most people to notice that a. AMD was not considered, and b. The list of motherboards is very restrictive. I personally have had no experience with AMD processors, and Intel has never given me any problems. Thus, I've chosen Intel over AMD.
As for the motherboards, the choice is limited by the shops here in Singapore. (If you *want* to know what they sell, there's online list of what the shops sell. As you can see, there isn't much. If you have any other motherboards to recommend, please tell me. I can call around. And there are purposely no MSI motherboards in the list. I haven't had one good experience with MSI boards ever. And that's from 3 years of building computers.
