A battery question for the UFicle by tully2006-11-19 12:55:59
The blatant lie in the first line puts me off. by AndyA 2006-10-26 15:16:45
Li-Ion cells do not have a shelf life of 3 years. That is a total fabrication.

If you store them incorrectly then you can ruin them in far less time, if you look after them they will last far longer.

Their capacity will decrease every time you use them, you are looking at around 80% of their new life after between 200 and 500 cycles depending on how fast you charge and discharge them.
Storing them fully charged or at high temperature will also damage them.
The charge/discharge rates laptops would put the life closer to 500 cycles but this is somewhat offset by the high ambient temperature in a computer.

Of course if you are using the computer when it is plugged into the wall the battery is going to be fully charged and fairly warm most of the time, the worst possible situation. If your laptop spends a lot of it's time in a docking station on a desk then you should take the battery out when it's not needed.
