Pi isn't actually random - mathematicians have found characteristics that are not consistent with a definition of true randomness. However, it is sufficiently random-like that a switch to another base will not change it's basic representation.

Some of the comments on the page are quite interesting, especially the ones that point out that within pi are all possible n by m pictures in the chosen colour code.

To me, the picture looks like laser speckle off of finely etched glass. I'm going to make a background picture.
