The laptop is probably worht more to you than the cost of the power adapter, and a modified / home-repaired power adapter has not the same factor of reliability as the factory-built stuff. If you are good with pushing electrons around, it could actually be -more- reliable, some of the switching power supplies I have rebuilt over the years are quite the robust little old beasts.

The fudge factor is all in how you do the repairs. if you can do pro-grade fix-it work, then by all means have at the thing and use it as your spare lappie adapter. Otherwise, do part the thing out. (I recommend if it is removable saving the cord.)
