... there were nine hostages alive when the police storm the bank. One of those nine die shortly after the standoff.

There are eleven hostages when the robbers first break in break in. The bank guard and Kathryn's mother apparently don't count as main characters or the show would have been called "The Eleven". Or even "The Thirteen" if you count the two bank robbers. One of my few criticisms of the show has been that it's confusing and distracting figuring out who count as "The Nine".
