during the days of the "studio system" actors who wanted to appear in movies had to sign long term contracts with the studio. As a part of this, actors would recieve a stage name, often to hide their ethnic origins. The key is that often the contracts would be written in such a way that the studio would retain rights to the use of the stage name, even if the actor left the studio.

Top stars could apparently negotiate for the publicity rights to their stage name, and then "lease" them back to the studio for a fee. since Jack Benny's legal name was Jack Benny, there was no reason to consider making this sort of a deal with him.

It's often been said that the real creative talent in Hollywood is the accountants.
