I've never replaced any batteries in it for the 10 years I've been in the house, and the little light on the test button still glows, and it still buzzes when I press it.

However, at this point I wonder what the half-life of the americium is; I've had a few occasions when I've overcooked something and had a bit of smoke in the house, but it made nary a peep.
