Question of the Day! by kickstart2006-11-19 12:26:49
Postulated, a nice strong motor of some sort by wwill 2006-10-26 07:44:34
And space launch capacity.

Orbit the three items, somewhere nice and empty. Plenty of empty available in outer space, shold be easy to find a spot.

Tie the string to the rock. Through a slip clutch, attach the bight of the string in such a manner as to allow it to slide outward (making the string longer).

Start the motor, the rock should "orbit" the motor, which will also tend to turn in the oppostite direction, that's fine, ignore it.

Keep the rotational speed constant, one rpm should do it, and gradually pay the string out while the motor continues to rotate.

Continue until the velocity of the stone in its one-rpm orbit (rim speed) approaches 300,000 metres per second.

Double the rpms. Observe the results. For bonus points, how long would the string be at one rpm for a rim speed of 300,000 metres per second?
