...if the battery is going dead, but still has a little juice left in it, pressing and holding the button might not work at first, but will work eventually.

IANAEE (electrical engineer), but if I had to guess, holding the button longer might allow enough residual electricity from the battery to complete the circuit. Only, as the battery gets weaker, the process takes longer. So we're conditioned to press the buttons harder and longer (okay, so that didn't sound quite right) because it takes longer for the circuit to complete.
