Skittle Defence by mathwaster 2006-10-26 05:49:02
Mark two circles on the floor - one about 2 foot diameter and the other about 25-30 foot in diameter.

Place three (ish) skittles upright near the centre of the smaller circle, separated by about 6".

Defending patrol must stay between two circles, and stay on their feet. Other patrols (outside large circle) must try to knock the skittles down by throwing (soft) footballs.

Time how long they can protect the skittles (keep them upright without touching them).

I usually start with one football, and introduce extras at 30 second or 1 minute intervals. It's a very good patrol that can defend for more than 2 minutes anyway.

Oh, and to encourage teamworking for the attackers, I don't let them move once they've picked up a ball, they must pass it on or throw it at the skittles.

And the defenders can throw balls they catch out of the circle, but can't hang on to them.

Tactics that tend to evolve include the attackers placing people anywhere the defenders can throw a ball to make it slow/hard to recover (e.g. hatch to kitchen, by stacks of chairs) and defenders splitting into static defenders near to the skittles and active defenders who try to disrupt throws from near the outside edge of the circle. Ricochets of the ceiling are another interesting tactic...
