DVD burner question by Master_Rahl222006-09-25 11:42:33
Plextor is a very reliable brand by psychoi3oy 2006-09-25 14:48:29
and while you pay a bit more for them, I've seen some of their original SCSI 2x CD-R drives still working, almost a decade later.

If you have the option to go SATA (i.e. already have a motherboard or add-on card for it), it's probably not a bad idea. Burner speeds are, as pointed out already, in the ballpark of 16/16/8 (+/-R,+/-RW,+/-DL) and 48/16 for CD-R/RW.

I just bought a Plextor PX-760A about 6 months ago and have yet to try any dual layer discs but all the other features work as advertized. I didn't go SATA because the website says they don't support my (old) SATA card. This particular model came with a black face plate installed but a white/beige one in the box so you can match it to whatever. Kinda useless to me (black case) but definitely a nice thought. I think this burner does 18x DVD+/-R but I haven't seen any media that does above 16x.
