I actually saw a therapist (I can't remember the name of the therapeutic approach) who gave me practice in such things - we practiced opening a conversation, responding to remarks, asking questions, closing the conversation, and saying goodbye. There was even a textbook, with homework exercises. It can be learned, no matter when. And I'll assure you, you're always young enough to enjoy a relationship.
