It was an opportunistic attack, and therefore wouldn't have taken place without the opportunity. The strikes were warranted, and I don't think anybody who made those "Wag the Dog" accusations really thought they weren't. But it was a chance to toss another partisan spear, so they took it. But having said at the time that the strikes were unwarranted and diversionary, they don't get to later say "why didn't you do anything about Bin Laden"? That argumentative ground was lost the moment they said (whether they believed it or not) that the actions he did take were unnecessary.
