A digital tuner is not expensive, but with previous musical training I have no trouble tuning the cheap violin I have.

If you get a 'real' piano, just try to make sure it's in an area without huge temperature swings- or you'll be seeing the piano tuner more often.

The dilemma between not sinking a lot into a beginner instrument, vs. buying high enough quality where the kid isn't frustrated as he advances, is a difficult one. My parents could not fathom why I wanted a "new" flute as I advanced- only when I bought a conservatory model with my summer earnings, and they HEARD the difference, that they understood.
