for just about any string or wind or brass instrument, as you have to tune it yourself. Pianists take this for granted, but pianists also learn to adapt immediately to whatever piano they happen to be on because they can't carry their instrument around with them. With string instruments you definitely have to upgrade sizes as the child grows up :)
