I went to my local GameStop to inquire about the Wii pre-order situation. They have no info on it (that they're allowed to share), but the guy at the counter did make a pretty good suggestion: Pre-order your games. He said that he's seen consoles launch, and people come to pick up their shiny new pre-ordered system, only to be disappointed when the game(s) they've been waiting to play are sold out already. I, personally, will be reserving my copy of Super Monkey Ball, Red Steel, and possibly Excite Truck.
