Even at 9 or 10 a lot of kids have to use the stupid "bent mouthpiece" flutes meant for smaller kids. Never saw/heard/played with one that sounded good. Looks like consensus is going toward a "real" piano. I don't know crap about guitar, so I can't comment. Maybe ponder violin?
