Depending on the age a xylophone can be nice by moddermonster 2006-09-25 05:19:39
It is fun to play even without a "boring" formal training and is not so bad to the ears as violin or trumpet (but unfortunately it's expensive). I always enjoyed having tons of inexpensive instruments around, like self-made rattles, mouth organ, tamburine, tin whistle (!) etc. that emphasize the "play" part of playing an instrument.

A guitar is great as it has a very wide spectrum, from playfully accompaining dirty songs at the bonfire to more serious blues or spanish whatever.

After enjoying this kind of "playing" music I'm no virtuoso on any instrument now, I'm not even fluid reading notes. But I play just about every instrument you give to me good enough to have fun and be able to use it in front of audience (that is supposed to have fun, too).
