| I seem to remember a proposal. |

Don't remember if it was sci-fi or not. The proposal was that in order to achieve a peaceful, well policed society, everybody would volunteer an hour or two each day. There would be cameras everywhere - and the volunteers would be assigned a camera to watch for criminal activity. If any was detected, the watcher would call the central dispatch (which would know where the camera was, of course).
Could this idea work? I guess it might depend on how well the camera locations were known, and how much coverage was actually achieved. But it seems to me that it would greatly reduce the need for a police force to keep an eye on things. The only police force needed would be the responding unit(s). I would assume that the camera assignments would be such that you never got the same camera twice, and you never got a camera that viewed friends or acquaintances. |
