Simple. People who don't want to read badly written or potentially offensive or annoyingly avant-garde literature just don't read it. It's not like other forms of art that are "in your face". And people who review these novels and dismiss them as conceptualist nonsense are in turn ignored by the masses. These days, the only sort of book that has a huge commercial success is those few where the author does the talkshow circuit, or the publishers go to great lengths to advertise it.
