Geeks go to LAN parties to play games for the same reason that wolf, etc. cubs play their martial games with each other: To prepare them for their grown up life and accustom them to their environment.

For wolf cubs the lesson is correct behaviour as predator and towards other wolfs in their pack in their natural habitat.

For geeks the lesson is: surviving the night on coke, jelly bears and carrots, while doing incredibly complex task, interleaved with incredibly boring mindless repetitive tasks and long times waiting for some progressbar to reach 100%, while screens glow in the semi darkness and the sound of a hundred fans fills the air.
