I just had magic smoke escape from my favorite box by ttlogic 2006-09-18 13:32:02
:'(

Not at all brand new, more a kind of semi-antique: a Sun 3/60.

It's been a bit of a hobby machine for me. It came from the bin with absolutely nothing: no (external) disk, no monitor, keyboard or mouse, no software, not even 1 SIMM of memory. I've had it boot SunOS 4.1 over the network with a serial console.

The last few weeks I'd taken up again (after about a year of doing nothing with it) the project of hooking its non-trivial video output to a VGA monitor. I'm not quite sure what happened, but I think something in my circuit-under-test or oscilloscope made contact with the SUN's chassis, and shouldn't have.

Most of the smell comes from the power supply; the noise could only have come from there as well. I hope that means the mainboard is still ok, at least there are no burn marks on it. Some of the chips in the video output section were distinctly warm, but given their operating frequencies that can be normal too.

I'm not to keen on repairing a switching power supply, but I'll certainly try. I'd really like to get this baby up and running again if the mainboard's still okay.
