Nikon have just released the D80 and Canon have released the EOS400. D70s and EOS350s can be found for very reasonable prices. As for the actual equipment, I've played with an EOS350 but I found the interface to it to be somewhat frustrating. That might be because the only electronics in my current SLR are the light meter and the flash trigger, but I suspect not. I've played briefly with a film Nikon and seem to recall it being a nicer camera to use, it all comes down to personal preference in the end though. The best advice I can give is to spend half an hour in a camera shop getting to know the EOS350 and see if you like it as much as the D70. No decent shop will begrudge you the time if they think you're serious about buying there.
