attn: techi870 (other gps folk) how accurate by unjust2006-09-18 07:40:25
It depends a lot on the enviroment. by AndyA 2006-09-18 09:09:52
In the open with a good view of the skies, within the coverage area for an SBAS system (e.g. WAAS) and 8 or more SVs in view then you should be able to get around a 2m (6-7') standard deviation from truth.
Under trees or when there are buildings/mountains blocking part of the sky then it will be more like 5m (12') or more.

Newer consumer GPS systems aren't normally any more accurate than older ones, all the development has been aimed at getting positions more of the time. A new one may claim to be more sensitive and be able to track more SVs at the same time but that does'nt make it any more accurate. In fact when you are using that extra sensitivity the results will often be less accurate.
