as mantioned, more important is the optics. Both Canon and Nikon have very good optical lens. Over all the two cameras are comparable in quality, with minor trade offs in features.

It's been a while since I've compared cameras, but if I recall correctly, the Canon is better in low light environments where as the Nikon is better for high speed. I looked at both when purchasing my Digital SLR, but opted for the Pentax as I have a number of lenses and filters for the pentax system. If starting over from scratch with a pocket full of cash, I think that I'd prefer the EOS system.

If you want to save money, go with the nikon and share the cost of addition lens with your father. :-) (what are dad's for?)
