Of course, better resolution is better (sharper/finer) image, and allows for detail magnification cutouts of the original image. But as you already said, 6MPx (if the sensor can do it without interlacing!) is usually enough, much more important than that is the lenses and the sensor quality (white noise, blur, oversaturation effects).
I have a Canon EOS350D, and I'm very pleased with it. I have the standard 18-55mm kit lens and a Sigma 55-200mm, and can borrow an 11-18mm lens and one to 300m, both from Tamron. The camera makes absolutely brilliant images with enough light, and allows for very fine tuning in "available light" scenes, but it takes some training. With less light (and the "cheaper" lenses), it is harder to make good images, but it is possible.
I like the "touch" of the camera. It's quite small, but heavy enough to hold something in your hand, additionally to the "good feeling" of the used material (especially compared to the 300D). |
