that 500 years ago Christianity exhibited the same behavior - to an extreme - that the Pope was denouncing. Personally I believe that Islam is going through something like Christianity has largely (but not completely) gone through, which is recognizing that compulsion to adhere (through violence or any other means) only degrades the religion and it's adherents.
