Everyone has their off-days. Gods know I was having one when I pulled that boner. Literally. About 1/8" further up the finger and the saw would likely have gone right through the first joint; as it was, it bounced off the end of the bone between the knuckle and first joint and kicked my hand out of it - the X-ray shows a triple-chip-style notch right on the outer knob of the bone.
