...I am not for us losing/giving up ANY rights we have enjoyed in the past. I'm one of those idiot idealists who believes that we shouldn't give up rights just because it's supposed to be easier/safer/etc. to do so. There are a lot of ways we can lose rights: some can be taken away from us by an unscrupulous government, and some we can give away because we don't find them useful anymore.
I am quite specifically a privacy "nut" and was complaining about the inherent privacy problems started by cool things like caller ID, which on its own, is a good idea, but created a precedent that allows your cable companies to mine and market your TV-watching habits.
I am a strong believer in the protection against illegal searches/seizures in the context of, for instance, DUI checkpoints and drug seizures.
I am a vocal supporter of freedom of speech and feel that the use of federal racketeering laws against anti-abortion protesters (designed to keep them away from clinics) was a horrible abrogation of free speech, even though I found most of the protesters to be ignorant thugs.
It's not that I'm paranoid about these things or insensitive to the fact that in a lot of cases, people are exploiting their rights to the detriment/damage of others. But I abhor the idea that we can abridge our basic rights to deal with the mood du jour.
I don't own any guns. For the record, I'm not against them...I just couldn't ever talk my wife out of the money to take up what can be a rather expensive hobby. But I am reluctant to see the right to bear arms...such as we've had it for most of our country's history...limited or removed.
It's been pointed out that owning a gun won't keep the big bad government from blowing us away if things come down to revolt...and you're quite likely right. But the effectiveness of such a pathetic stand is not nearly enough justification (in my book, of course) for removing a right that I believe our Constitution guarantees.
Besides, though I don't find revolt a very viable scenario, I CAN envision cases of world chaos/anarchy where the ownership of firearms might truly come in handy. |
