No sane man commits crime simply because he wants to. People commit crimes for many reasons. That's not the issue. The issue is defending yourself against whomever wishes to commit a crime against you. The police aren't going to do it - they are not responsible for assuring your personal safety, they are there to keep peace and adminster law. "if it IS a mu(r)derer a gun won't help you much..." ...it gives you a bloody good chance to stay alive in that case, I'd say. Ponder the meanings behind the sayings "An armed society is a Polite society" and "If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns". You may think them trite and cliche', but they pretty-much sum up a lot of the attitudes toward firearm ownership in America, besides the fact of the Second Amendment.
