        KC is a cross-road hub... by jdelphiki 2006-09-14 11:50:51
...for a lot of things.

Communications, with a major telecom industry headquartered here. Rail, with hubs for quite a few rail companies. Trucking, as the HQ for a major carrier. Highways, with I-35 serving as a main north/south interstate corridor and I-70 serving as an east/west.

Tulsa, I'm not as familiar with, but I think it's a pretty big oil industry town, among other things.

In the old Cold War days, Wichita and Salina used to be considered fairly major nuke targets because of the long, bomber-friendly runways in both places (particularly at McConnell and the old Schilling AFB's, respectively), and the airplane industry in Wichita. Not to mention that Wichita is the geographic center of the universe when it comes to fast food restaurant chains. ;)
