I think it might be a setting in cache/prefs.ini; granted, I've turned on network=1 and networkAdvanced=1 in mine, which gives me a slightly different login screen, so maybe that has to do with it? But I'm pretty sure I remember a checkbox that says "Save Password" even on the default, unmodified login screen. And I agree, it's disturbing and definitely food for thought.
