I remember reading quite some time ago that the best way to describe civilisation is the following- "Imagine a river of blood flowing through a valley. In the river are all the wars, political intrigues, famines and diseases of history. Civilisation is what happens on the banks." That may have come from Hendrik Willem Van Loon, though it was too long ago for me to be sure. I would recommend hs writings to anyone interested in history though.
