*mutters non-FYOS things* by radiowave911 2006-09-08 19:21:42
If it weren't for bad luck, i'd have no luck at all.

Seems like everything is falling down around me. First, I have an apartment that takes way too long to get ready to rent. Just when I think I am close, the main water line for the house (which happens to run through this apartment) springs a leak. I think it's groundwater at first (we were having lots of rain) and didn't think to look for a leak in the ceiling (this ia a basement apartment). End result? Destroyed counter, back splash, and cabinet under the sink (the fungus is among us).

In the meantime, as a result of all the rain, the roof starts to leak over the second floor apartment's kitchen. This is the part of the roof that the idiot roofing contractor was supposed to include when he replaced the rest of the roof on the building, but never quite got around to before the state's attorney general brought him up on fraud charges, amongst other things. Drywall and insulation come out of the kitchen ceiling (I took it down/out before it fell down). I finally have the ceiling closed (I did the roof myself, with the help of a co-worker. No small feat, considering I am rather seriously acrophobic), have to finish with the joint compound, sanding, then paint.

The water line (polyethelene tubing) for my refrigerator's icemaker/water dispenser decided to spring a leak. Got that fixed, after a run-in with some skateboarders that were in the way when I got home with the fittings I needed (a run-in because they were in my driveway, beside the house, jumping off the porch steps, etc. Oh, did I mention they don't even live in the neighborhood?). The police were involved with that one. Haven't seen the skateboarders since.

The roof over the first floor apartment's bedroom (the roof doubles as the second floor apartment's porch) decided to spring a leak. Dropping ceiling tiles onto an antique dressing table the tenant had in her bedroom. They sat there for several hours before being discovered (she saw them when she went back to go to bed). I *think* I got that leak fixed.

While investigating the bedroom leak, I discovered that there is no insulation in the ceiling of the bedroom. No wonder it gets cold back there in the winter. Not sure yet how to insulate without ripping down the entire ceiling (not something I want to do). I may try to blow insulation in there.

The water line to my refrigerator decided it was going to leak *again* tonight. I can't cut off any more line - it is almost too short already. I decided to re-route the water supply completely - eliminating the 'vampire' saddle valve from under the kitchen sink (that was feeding the line) and am running pipe from a nearby water line to the back of the refrigerator, installing a filter while I am at it, and putting a local cutoff valve in the new water line so I don't have to turn off the water to the entire house when there is a problem there.

In amongst all of this, I received a notice from the county. Semms I missed paying my realestate taxes last year for the apartments. The amount due is currently in the neighborhood of US$2000 that I don't have, and don't know where to get. Credit is maxed out at the moment with some of the other problems (had to take a loan against the rentals to replace the roof originally, fix the sidewalk and driveway, and replace a few appliances that decided to die together). We are coming up on heating season, I still don't have the basement apartment ready to rent, and am barely meeting regular expenses now. I also have a $2200 tax bill due in the next three months (different thatn the overdue one above).

If it weren't for the fact that the rental is right next door to my house, it would have been sold long ago.

Ok, I guess this post turned into a 'dump my troubles at the world's feet' thing, but it feels somewhat better getting it off my chest. I haven't even touched on the idiotic things I had to deal with this week at work (not my company's idiocy - a vendor's). Not a drop of alcohol in the house, either, and the state stores are closed so I can't get any, either.
