The chains -- burgers, pizza, steakhouses etc. -- are thought of as American food, just as sushi places in the US are considered Japanese and curry places in the UK are considered Indian. Interestingly, these chains serve a much closer approximation of American food (i.e. stuff typically eaten in the US) than curry houses serve Indian.
