You wrote (correctly): "and the veggitarians usually get funny looks from the general [French] population" Incidently enough in the late 80-ies and early 90-ies, when you wanted to get some decent veggie food in Germany, your best bet, esp. in university towns, was usually French restaurants (usually run by a frankophil German though)....
