ATTN: non-USian UFies or UFies who've travelled by hadji2006-09-08 14:54:37
  In paris by Lis77 2006-09-08 15:38:23
There are a number of such places.

Breakfast in America is a typical diner, with breakfast food (including bacon!), burgers and pie. Yummy! It's a rather casual place, could be fun for a first date, but not if you wanted to impress someone.

There's a few chains that advertise American food, which is typically Tex-Mex like food (Indiana is the name of one, I can't recall the other big one). Their food isn't bad (a good place for things like brownie sundays) and definitely a step up from a diner. I'd equate it more with a Chilis or an Applebees in terms of fanciness. I don't think I'd go there to impress a date, but I don't generally consider 'typical' american cuisine very impressive.
