TV premieres: "'Til Death" and "Happy Hour" by SnappingTurtle 2006-11-19 12:55:59
The premiere thread in an occasional series of threads about TV shows that just premiered. In particular, we try to predict which shows will last.

'Til Death: not as bad as I thought it would be. I thought the show would consist entirely of a cynical view of marriage. There was plenty of that, but also some less cynical developments and also just some humor that didn't rely on cynical/not-cynical. I did get the impression that Brad Garrett was trying to channel Raymond from "Everybody Loves Raymond", but everybody else seems to have their own character. I think this show will last.

Happy Hour: This show could be the dark horse of the season's new offerings. It was launched with little or no hype: that alone got me interested. The show is about Henry, a twenty-something who finds himself in a new stage of life after losing his girl, apartment, and job all at once. He is guided through this transition by his stereotypical drinking, crass roommate. Interestingly, the show doesn't take place in a bar: the "Happy Hour" of the title refers to Henry's newfound freedom from responsibility. The show is filled with sex humor, drinking humor, misogyny humor, and more drinking humor. The characters are two-dimensional but charming and fun to watch. There is definitely room for this show to grow, but I doubt the TV audience will give them the chance to get that far. I'll watch it again, but I predict this show is gone in a month.
