Military folk, just like anyone else, are rationally thinking human beings first, soldiers second.

The most important thing any soldier should learn during basic training is that he has the duty to refuse participation in activities he considers ethically wrong.

You don't hand over your sense of morals and ethics at enlistement, and if you do, that's a trait that should mark you as unsuitable for armed service.
