that he can read a statement attributed to the Pentagon or that the number is as high as it is?

For either of those issues perhaps you should direct your anger at the Pentagon for reporting the number, the soldiers for going AWOL or at whatever is causing the lionshare of the missing soldiers (the story states that it is the Iraq war though that is clearly impossible to determine without more precise information from that Pentagon).
