was from an article in the Telegraph almost exactly one year ago, which claims:
American Army soldiers are deserting and fleeing to Canada rather than fight in Iraq, rekindling memories of the thousands of draft-dodgers who flooded north to avoid service in Vietnam.
An estimated 5,500 men and women have deserted since the invasion of Iraq, reflecting Washington's growing problems with troop morale.
Since that article is specifically referring to deserters, I'd imagine that 5,500 is supposed to represent people actually deserting rather than just going AWOL for a day or something, though it does not give a source for the article.
If the number was in fact accurate at the time of the article, though, then that's 5,500 in 30 months (March 2003 - Sept 2005), which is 183 desertions per month.
Which still wouldn't give you anywhere near 40,000 between 2000 and now, but would still give you the impressive number of around 13,000. |
