Holy cow! 40,000 US deserters since 2000?! by Illiad2006-11-19 12:55:59

Here's the line that makes me groan... by esbita 2006-09-08 09:43:02
"We’re blowing up museums, people’s homes, all the culture. I mean, I didn’t even realise Iraq was Mesopotamia, you know? There’s all this culture and everything in Iraq."

AUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!! *bangs head against desk*

It's also in that section where the point is buried that Vietnam had a draft, Iraq did not. My dad was a CO. But he had NOT signed up for the armed forces, either. I think he worked in a hospital or something in lieu of service. Briefly considered running North, but decided, "This is my home. I will not run."

My parents were careful to impress on us that if you take the government's check, they OWN you. And described, or had us listen to, people who HAD gone to war. But if you sign on the dotted line, it's not your decision where you serve. Had I signed up for the military, I wouldn't have made to basic training. Mom would've killed me instead.

My mom was substitute teaching in the early 90's. Many farmers and farmer's WIVES were in the Reserve, for that extra monthly check. Sometimes BOTH parents got called up, and Grandma had to take care of the kids. "It's not fair! You can't do this to us!" They signed up, why did they think they'd never be asked to go?
