UFie Gaming Corner - Lots to talk about today! by Gaming_Corner 2006-11-19 12:55:59
Welcome to the Friday edition of the UFie Gaming Corner! Below the block, I've got lots of little stories for you, including a marching band playing video game music. :-)

Discussion of any and all types of gaming are welcome here - console games, PC games, pen and paper games, board games, it's all on the table.

If you mention or link to a game that other people might like to find later, please toss it in the Online Games or Download Games diary as appropriate. (And of course, head over there periodically to check out what's new!)

Daily news links and an archive can be found in the diary, and if you want to manually browse recent Gaming Corners, this link to the UF Toolbox will allow you to do so - just use the "previous cartoon" and "next cartoon" buttons to switch days.

If you have a topic you'd like to see covered in the Gaming Corner, or an article I ought to check out, feel free to email me at Ravenlock (put the little at symbol thingy here) inbox (put the little dot symbol thingy here) com. Time permitting, this will be posted daily, but anyone who wishes to cover it on a day when I'm being slow is of course welcome to do so - just copy the TLP from the previous day. :-)

No theme today, but lots of little amusing tidbits. Some of you probably watched the farce of an E3 presentation that Sony put up this year, but if you missed the highlight of it (Kyle Shubel introducing a game "based on real Japanese history" that then involves a giant crab as an enemy), Kotaku has the video for you, along with a brief quote from an interview with Mr Shubel himself.
...what's really interesting is we're trying to tell a story which is very serious to Japanese natives. We're trying to cover a major era where they went from an aristocratic society to a feudal society. While having fun with it, you know, it's not our culture, we don't recognize it, so therefore you can have a little fun with it.
...Yes, I'm sure the Japanese historians who find this subject "very serious" will appreciate that you're "having fun with it" and will find your inclusion of giant crabs hilarious. :-/

Next item! Firaxis Games has announced "Sid Meier's Civilization Chronicles" - It will basically have every Civ game ever made (Sid Meier's Civilization I, Sid Meier's Civilization II, Civilization II: Fantastic Worlds, Civilization II: Conflicts in Civilization, Civilization II: Test of Time, Sid Meier's Civilization III, Sid Meier's Civilization III: Play the World, Sid Meier's Civilization III: Conquests and Sid Meier's Civilization IV) along with the Civilization tabletop card game and a 96 page book on the history of the series, a DVD, and some other stuff, for $69.99. While I won't be buying it because I already own most of that, the card game and book are attractive extras and for Civ fanatics I'm sure it'll be a very popular package.

Next item! Is there anything HL2 can't do? It's hard to say, but recreating Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural masterpiece "Fallingwater" is certainly within its powers.

Last item! I love me some videogame music, and during the halftime show on 8/31, Mississippi State focused entirely on videogame music. I'm not sure what Mortal Kombat was doing in there, but Super Mario World was a lovely rendition, and seeing the Triforce formed on the field at the end was very moving. ;-)

Hopefully some of that was amusing to you. Have a great weekend, guys. :-D
