Our daughter is 11 and severely autistic.
Please remember that this is the experience of having a SEVERE autistic child. There are few girls who are autistic and few autistics as severe as our daughter Kayla.
Also I am tired. so very tired.
She was diagnosed at just before she was 3. Which is about the time it usually shows up however, Kayla is severe so it was hard not to miss it.
I hope he is not severe. There is very little joy in being spat at, bitten, pinched and strangled by your child because they are pissed off for some unknown (or sometimes known but unavoidable reason) No fun knowing you child will be able to kill you in a couple of years when they are a little bigger and will never understand what they are doing and the consequences of their actions and you may not be able to stop them.
No fun knowing that you can't take your child out without people looking at you as if you are a bad parent because your child looks perfectly normal, except for screaming and spitting etc.
There is nothing rewarding about looking after a child who is severely autistic. I hope yours is mild. Kayla will never really improve over where she is now, she will just get bigger (looking like she will hit 6ft). She is mentally a 3 year old, maybe 4. (If your 4 year old can't construct a proper sentence and doesn't understand the concept of consequences) She talks in quotes and can't really construct a unique sentence.
She has sensory issues. She has control issues. She has anger issues. She is very violent, She has issues. She can never be left alone. She is on anti-psychotics which have brought the violence down to three or four sustained (1hr to all day) incidents a week. We are aiming to get it down to once a week (we can dream)
But she is potty trained (every pain to train them now is more than worth it - believe me).
There are no services for her where we are because she is too severe, the wrong age, etc etc. So she goes to school and that is it.
Our life is a cycle of the three places we can take Kayla
The Food Store (best not to take her to a Walmart or a Fred Meyer,Safeway best as least toys for sale to piss her off that we aren't buying them for her)
The Zoo (tho she pretty much only goes for the gift shop now)
The Library (she likes getting books out - tho she doesn't read them)
We watch a lot of DVDs (we don't receive TV as we can't deal with Kayla after she has watched one programme with 50 adverts)
She has no special talents - she is not a savant - few are.
Please remember this is a worst case senario. Hopefully your child will be able to lead an independant life and you wont be looking after them when they are 40 and still trying to kill you.
You see now you will feel not as bad when he has a bad turn as you will know that he could be a lot worse
Good luck |
